Teaching Chatbots to Talk Like You
Imagine if you could get to know someone on the other side of the world — simply by interacting with their chatbot every day. Researchers at the Shree Devi Institute of Technology in India are working on a chatbot that can learn from your digital footprint how to emulate your personality. Digital Trends recently reported on this interesting new research project.
How it works
The project’s researchers are basing their program on Replika A.I., an app created by a Russian coder. This app allows you to feed digital conversations into a chatbot to “replicate” someone’s speech and communication patterns. Just like other machine learning/AI programs, the more information or data you feed into this proposed chatbot, the more it learns from its training data. The goal is to create chatbots that learn from social media like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, emails, videos, and other relevant data. The researchers want to create a chatbot that comes close to a perfect imitation of what someone would say and sound like in a conversation.
Its potential impact
Researchers hope that creating this chatbot program could open avenues of communication and connection not encountered elsewhere. For example, imagine if you’re trying to learn the French language. Beyond the standard language software programs, it might help if you have a chatbot to talk to that could imitate a French person’s conversational style and speech patterns. You could initiate conversations around any subject you’re trying to conquer in another language.
There are many uses for a personal chatbot. Maybe your personal chatbot can get so good at imitating you that you can hit the links while your chatbot holds down the office.
It’s too soon to tell how this could possibly pan out as the chatbot program is still in the research phase. We should keep close tabs on this project as the new year unfolds.
