5G- Enabling New Applications
New use cases continue to be identified for 5G, the next generation of mobile network, from connected automobiles to AI, smart manufacturing, and immersive AR and VR technologies. In fact, many believe that immersive technologies won’t reach their full potential until 5G is rolled out. Both VR and AR require more substantial networks with reduced latency and greater consistency if they are to continue to evolve.
Innovative New Applications
With more wireless connectivity options, faster network speeds, higher bandwidth, reduced latency, and other enhancements, 5G will enable not only new ways to connect but also new applications:
· In the medical field, 5G is bringing smart solutions by providing health care to people in remote locations. The new technology is already being used to train doctors remotely.
· On the road, connected and self-driving cars will communicate to avoid collisions. We are already seeing partnerships developed, even amongst long-time competitors (Mercedes and BMW) to optimize the use of new technologies.
· In the air, drones will talk to each other, ensuring the devices operate without incident.
· In immersive experience; AR and VR require moving lots of data over a wireless network. Networks need to be fast but also accommodate vast amounts of data to create a truly immersive VR experience.
· Robotics is an emerging technology which will benefit significantly from 5G as evidenced at the recent Barcelona Mobile World Congress:
·There was a humanoid, greeter robot, Sophia
·B;eat is the robot barista serving coffee from phone orders
· XR-1 capable of threading a needle or serving drinks
· Kebbi a childcare robot already in service in China and Taiwan
·Liku is an adorable robot who uses facial and voice recognition and can discern your mood
· Robelf is the domestic robot that also serves as a home security system, again using facial recognition
· And, Huvasquana, the robotic lawn mower
· Smart Home Devices. I’ve addressed Smart Homes in previous blogs and detailed how they improve our lives in ways that weren’t possible before. You might have a connected thermostat, garage door opener, or surge protector, window shades, or lightbulbs in your home already.
With 5G expect advancements in security, optimizing power and water usage, video streaming, personalized entertainment, and a suite of applications to aid seniors.
· More cloud-based applications to provide new digital experiences to both consumers and enterprises, such as; mobile payment options, drone services, entertainment content, environmental, in manufacturing, and in retail.
Final Thoughts
5G technology will transform industries in multiple verticals in ways we cannot even envision today. Some will become disruptions in their space, and, so many of the technologies and applications we’ve been waiting for can finally become a reality. Be prepared to be amazed.
