Where to Mount Your New Flat Screen
– Does it Really Make a Difference
So, you just purchased a new flat screen TV. Where do you mount it? How do you mount it? Does it really make a major difference? And, what are some of the factors you should be considering?
What is the Best Location
Let’s start this discussion by noting in today’s modern home there is no single location for a flat screen. We’ll provide several ideas here with the basic concept being you are going to be mounting several TVs as there are several unique and exciting places for viewing.
Obviously, there are the bedrooms, the master, of course, as well as the kids or guest bedrooms. Just don’t make the one in the guest bedroom too good or you may encounter unintended consequences, such as extended stays.
How better to watch the Food Network than a TV in the kitchen? What an excellent idea for following along and whipping up new recipes.
In the appropriate climate having a wall-mounted TV under a covered patio is a great way to watch your favorite sporting event while grilling or minding the kids in the pool.
Let’s not forget one in the workout room for watching while on the exercise bike or treadmill or following a favorite spinning video.
And, what man cave or she-shed is complete without a large flat screen?
Of Course, the Living or Family Room
For most families, the primary viewing area is going to be the living room or family room. So, you’ll need to pay attention to things like lighting, wall space, and which wall is sturdy enough to hold a sixty plus inch TV. Finding the ideal location can become a bit of a dilemma.
If you’ve purchased a newly built home, it may have a designated space for the TV that will work famously. If you’ve bought an older home or fixer-upper, there may not be an ideal spot for mounting a flat screen. Flat screens have only been in vogue the past twenty years or so.
In most homes mounting your flat screen directly across from the couch seems to be logical. However, you’ll want to consider height, electrical, angle, and glare from lighting, both direct sunlight and lamp placement.
The Complexities of Mounting
What if that ideal location is above a fireplace or on a brick wall? The wall you’re mounting the TV to becomes a pretty important factor. A brick wall brings about its own set of challenges, as does drywall when you’re installing a flat screen. Above the fireplace can also present issues as heat and smoke which do not necessarily mix well with electronics.
