Google & iRobot Partner to Map Your Inside World as Well
With the advent of Google Maps over a decade ago, our world has become increasingly more accessible, thanks to GPS and Google’s insight. No more TripTiks and unfoldable maps stuffed in your vehicle’s glove box. Now you listen to your friendly Google assistant for directions to the next stop on your travels and adventures. Google has mapped our external world to perfection.
Now, iRobot’s popular Roomba integrates with Google Assistant to help you direct where and when your Roomba cleans next. This functionality allows you to choose in what order the Roomba cleans your house.
Google and iRobot recently announced a new avenue to their partnership. Consumers can opt-in to allowing Roomba and Google to map the interior of their homes for a more complete smart home experience. While Google and iRobot both claim they won’t use data from mapping your home’s interior to sell any products, they will use it to help you create a smarter home. For example, Roomba’s internal mapping services can help consumers decide where to place smart lightbulbs in their homes.
With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its exploding growth, using available technology to simplify how you set up your smart devices makes sense. Most consumers struggle with how best to take advantage of IoT devices to engineer their smart homes. But at what point does a company overstep its reach into your personal and private world?
We need strict privacy policies before we launch a full-scale invasion of your home’s space. Making the iRobot and Google affiliation an opt-in choice is a first step to ensuring you have control. Comprehensive rules, regulations, and cybersecurity measures for all IoT devices will protect consumers from unwanted intrusion.
If you currently share information with software manufacturers and other companies from your laptop or desktop, you’ve opted in to share certain personal information. The same could be true soon for your home’s interior. Only you can decide how much reach companies should have into your personal life.
